Can the pool be cleaned with something other than chlorine?
Whether you’re allergic to chlorine or if you’re simply looking for a way to keep the pool water bacteria free and sanitized without using chlorine or with being able to use less chlorine, here are some alternatives:
- Bromine. This isn’t vastly different, but it works as a sanitizer. It’s ideal for those with chlorine allergies. Bromine is usually mixed with chlorine allowing for a smaller amount of chlorine needing to be used.
- PHMB, short for polyhexamethylene biguanide is a viable option. This compound will not oxidize the water. Your pool contractor will add hydrogen peroxide and an algaecide to keep the water clear.
- Ozonator. This system injects ozone gas into the water. The gas reacts with impurities in the water and eradicates them. Choose from an ultraviolet light ozonator or a corona discharge ozonator. In one, UV light is introduced to the pool water and kills the bacteria. In the corona system, an electrical arc creates ozone inside a generator and that kills pathogens in the water.
- A salt chlorination system. Table salt is used to clean the water. Inside the salt water chlorination system, salt is converted to chlorine and the water is cleaned. It’s been said by those who use the system that the water is “soft” and their skin feels silky.
- Natural pools. With a natural pool, your pool contractor will dig an area adjacent to your pool and it will be planted with aquatic plants that help filter the pool water and remove impurities.
Any of these alternatives to chlorine are viable, but you need to thoroughly understand the process, the costs involved and any unique care items you may need to address with a chlorine pool cleaning alternative.
